Is Office Dating a Good Idea?
Office dating has been an issue that many people debate and still continue to argue. It is impossible to find an office environment where people do not flirt with each other or have relationships with colleagues. Many management experts believe that people that relate affectionately during working hours have a very low productivity rate due to the constant interruptions from their partners. Some organizations have put harsh policies in place to prevent employees from dating or getting married to each other. Couples that are married and work in the same company may have no option but to adhere to these rules and policies set by the relevant administrators. Most people spend much of their time at the office and this denies them the chance to socialize with other people outside the organization.
This thus, causes employees to date their colleagues. Since it is normal to fall in love with persons of the opposite sex, a person may want to consider a number of things in order to avoid breaking the company’s rules. If one is not sure, they ought to review the company policies concerning office dating. A couple may decide to date secretly though they should be careful not to let it out to their colleagues. At the workplace, rumors spread fast and a couple may find themselves in deep trouble with the management after letting their colleagues in on their little secret. Besides low productivity, office couples are likely to take sick or pregnancy leave together thus, causing the company to allocate their work to other people.
This is another reason why many organizations do not encourage their employees to have relationships with their workmates. If a person in authority establishes a relationship with one of the employees, people may indict them of favoritism. Arguments at the workplace between couples may affect their business and professional relationships. When dating, a couple should avoid conflicting when working instead, they should resolve their differences when outside the place of employment. As much as people may not want to admit it, office relationships may get sour especially when one is overprotective. It is hard to treat one’s boyfriend the way one treats other colleagues and this is why companies prohibit people from having relationships in the office.
In the event of a break up, a person may try to make their partner uncomfortable by hitting on other colleagues in their presence. This may affect their productivity at work and may affect their mental, emotional and social health as well. Colleagues are likely to begin to spite their colleagues by spreading false rumors about the affair and this may affect a person’s relationship with them. In most cases, the affected party may opt to quit the job or avenge this by spreading false rumors about their former partners. As much as relationships are healthy, they may affect a person’s relation with the bosses and their colleagues. When secretly dating, couples should avoid coming to work and leaving together as this may hint people at the workplace. Avoid showing preferential treatment especially when in authority.
